VLC Media Player is the most performing media player ever. Its a lightweight solution to our world of entertainment. It supports a huge number of video formats. But now, VLC has brought some things new to the plate. For the first time in the history of media players, VLC has added support for 8K video. Oh yes, You read that right. VideoLan Organization has just released the VLC 3.0 update. And it is full of jaw dropping features. Let’s dig in.

3.0 “Vetinari” is a new incredible major update of VLC.

Code-named after Terry Pratchett’s fictional Lord Vetinari , it has added support for HDR10 and does HD audio pass-through. It now supports 4K and 8K playback on regular phones and computers as it has hardware acceleration on all platforms. Also, it can Chromecast videos that aren’t natively supported by Chromecast, a major boon to Chromecast users.


VLC 3.0 also works with Blu-Ray Java menus and features network browsing support for local network and NAS drives, including those with SMB, FTP, SFTP, NFS filesystems. It also adds support for HD DVD .evo files.


Along with the 8K and HDR10 support, it supports 360 video and 3D audio, up to Ambisoncics 3rd order. It also added the comfort of browsing  local network drives and NAS.  Venturebeat reports that the new version fixes more than 1,500 bugs, shares the same code across platforms, and has been in the works for three years.

It has many new codecs. Here is the list:

  • Experimental AV1 video and Daala video decoders
  • OggSpots video decoder
  • New MPEG-1 & 2 audio layer I, II, III + MPEG 2.5 decoder based on libmpg123
  • New BPG decoder based on libbpg
  • TDSC, Canopus HQX, Cineform, SpeedHQ, Pixlet, QDMC and FMVC decoders.
  • TTML subtitles support.
  • Rewrite of webVTT subtitles support, including CSS style support.
  • BluRay text subtitles (HDMV) deocoder.


Other improvements include:

  • A redesigned and resizable full screen controller.
  • A new status bar icon which displays metadata and play controls.
  • Support for keyboard backlight dimming during full screen video playback.
  • Significant performance improvements in playlist handling.
